My First Trip To Mac
Hello I'm Clo!
Within the make up and beauty industry Mac
is a widely advertised and talked about brand. There is a lot of hype around
Mac which is often debated amongst industry experts, bloggers and wearers alike
as to wether Mac is being over hyped or just generally having a top notch
product that is truly getting the hype it deserves.
I’m currently taught by a make-up lecturer,
that is 100% against Mac cosmetics. She doesn’t buy into the products or the
concepts. It’s a brand that’s frowned upon and as a lecturer she advises us on
more accessible and more price range appropriate for our student status. That
being said ,whilst discussing bridal make-up it was advised we invest in a more
expensive product. So when we’re working out In the field it’ll give long
lasting make up for the bride to look her best, throughout her big day.
That night I browsed the Mac website to
have a little look at the long lasting, full coverage make up and foundations
they had to offer so I had more of an idea regarding the tone, staying power
and most importantly to a student on a budget; price. I came across the ‘What
Foundation Suits You?’ online test, which told me which foundation would suit
me and would offer the coverage and staying power I required. I found the
online survey really helpful and gave me insight into exactly what I was
looking for and prepped me on my info before venturing into one of their
Fast forward to Thursday, early for a
meeting in Birmingham I wondered into the mac store to check the colours of
their foundations and to kill some time.
Before finding what I was looking for, I
stumbled upon the mineral make up section! OOooo that’s where I belong!
Swatching the colours NW15 in the concealer, NW 20 in the mineral foundation on
the back of my hand for first impressions and then on my jaw line to check the
true colour and match.
Admiring my fresh faced complexion an
assistant came over to help me as I couldn’t actually see my jaw line to check
if the colour was in fact the right one for me.
Before I knew it I was in the make-up
chair, bags down having a consultation.
They are thorough. They really do know
their stuff. The products and the skin conditions and medication that may
effect the way you look and feel.
As I couldn’t see my jaw line, the Make-Up
artist offered to make up my face, so I could get a real feel for the
product. This was the perfect
opportunity for my to get to know a little more about the products and the
smiley, happy lady who was applying it. I’m all for meeting new people and
finding out all about them- I guess I’m just nosey! My make up artist Thrina
has worked at Mac for 13 years , repeat 13 YEARS. She was brill! We got
chatting about acne, covering it up and body and facial scarring, it was nice
to speak to someone who’s got some life experience has been there with acne and
knows exactly what it makes you feel like. I ended up doing a little Q and A If
you like, whilst seated having my make up applied. It was incredibly relaxing
and I felt very welcome.
Thrina removed my make-up using the mac
make up remover wipes, then once it was all removed she added the complete
comfort crème to my face and blended into my neck to provide a base for all the
Mac cosmetic goodies!
“A moisturiser formulated to instantly
rehydrate the skin and provide immediate and ongoing relief from redness and
irritation. Ultra-creamy, provides high-comfort wear while providing sensitive
skin with the soothing benefits associated with its calming plant-and
Complete Comfort Crème. £24.50 per 50ml.
Natural radiance primer in pink was then
applied to help keep the foundation on my face and fixed to provide a long
lasting, durable look. It was released on Thursday so I was one of the very
first people to get their hands on it and try it out (How exciting!) It’s a really light baby pink. It’s so newly
released it doesn’t seem to be on the website in pink as of yet, however the
yellow version from the same collection is. This is what Mac had to say about
the yellow primer:
“A silky gel
emulsion, rich in natural ingredients, hydrates and primes to improve
foundation or powder application, control oil and promote smooth texture.
Vitamins E and C protect with antioxidants, while caffeine calms skin.
Illuminating pearl powders reflect optic brightening. Especially effective on
fairer skin tones, the formula disappears upon application, resulting in a
Natural Radiance Primer in pink - £29 per 50ml.
I honestly got too caught up in
conversation to notice the primer feel, it was all so creamy and I love the
colour, beautiful! I remember Thrina did apply it with her foundation brush and
often freely blended it in with the complete comfort crème to create a sort of
mix effect product.
Selecting a Mineralize Moist Foundation
from the rack of multiple complexion bottles, Thrina got the shade right first
time, no messing and no faffing. Straight onto the mixing palette then onto
brush and finally onto face. That easy! I will just take this moment to
highlight that it has taken me 3 foundation purchases of the Maybelline Superstay
24 hour foundation in order to attempt to make a colour suitable for my face
and I’m still not there yet. Yes, I know, think how I feel!
The liquid foundation glided onto my face
and blended seamlessly into my face in the shade NW20. Perfect there were no
tide marks, blemishes (OMG IKR) or unsightly patches. I was in love.
“A combination of
powders creates an optical blurring effect that virtually diminishes
imperfections and fine lines, for a more even tone. The light-reflecting,
natural satin finish makes skin appear refined, revitalized and refreshed with
a new purity, softly lit from within. SPF 15 adds the perfect finishing touch
of sun protection. Features our 77-Mineral Complex, Shea Butter and Vitamin E.”
Mineralize Moist Foundation - £27 per 30ml.
It wasn’t flawless all over the face,
nothing ever is. It did a very good job though, considering Thrina had to
remove my make up with a wipe and wasn’t starting on a clean slate. Finished
off with a light skin finish powder to set it and keep it in place and attempt
to shield it from the vile weather (It did a good job!)
Thrina happily popped a sample of the
foundation and the primer in official Mac pots and into a Mac bag along with a
face chart of what she’d applied so I wouldn’t have to remember code numbers or
names. We then got chatting about the ethos of Mac and how you can go in and
try out shades, new products and looks without charge and there is no pressure.
Thrina told me that in her job there’s no need to be pushy the products and
brand speaks for itself and as she’s not on commission being pushy is of no
benefit to her. I though that was very honest, showing she really does love her
job and believe in the company she works with. The world needs more Thrinas.
I never buy straight away as I’ve made that
mistake before with the super bloody stay! But after using it and wearing it, I
certainly will be popping back to purchase the foundation (NW20) and the
matching concealer (NW15)
It was a really lovely, uplifting
experience that I thoroughly enjoyed! I will be back!
